This is an important test to look for early changes on the cervix (neck of the womb) that may need treatment before they proceed to more serious inflammation and / or possibly cancer of the cervix. It is really the only test available that can predict and treat a problem before cancer develops.
Women who are sexually active or have ever been in the past and are aged between 24-65 years are routinely called up for a cervical smear test every 3-5 years.
We have women doctors and nurses at the practice who are happy to perform the test for you. It must be done whilst you are free from bleeding if you are still having regular periods. The procedure takes about 5-10 minutes and is usually painless. We are now using the new method of smear preparation and detection called Liquid Based Cytology (LBC) which has the advantage of reducing rates of inadequate smears thus reducing your anxiety and the results are more reliable and returned more quickly.
If you are happy to book a smear test or wish to discuss any aspect of the procedure first, please telephone the surgery during surgery hours, so that we can arrange a convenient date and time for you.

Prescription Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
From 1 April 2012, the charges are:
- Prescription (per item): £7.40
- 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC. The charge for a single prescription item is £7.40, whereas a three month PPC will cost you £29.10 and a 12 month PPC £104.00.

The root cause of most cases of heart disease, stroke, transient ischaemic attack and peripheral vascular disease is a build up of atheroma- a fatty deposit within the inside lining of arteries. People aged over 40 should have a cardiovascular risk assessment (available at Kingsway Surgery). If you have a high risk of developing cardiovascular diease treatment to reduce your blood pressure or reduce your cholesterol may be advised. A daily low dose of aspirin is alos commonly advised for people who already have cardiovascular disease.
